seam-logoDuring the establishment and initial evolution of the interior protection industry, fire marshals, safety personnel, and insurance companies expressed concerns about suspended cover impeding standard fire sprinkler systems.

The basic methods of protection during reroofing have the potential to impair the system’s functionality. Installing suspended cover below the sprinklers could delay its response to the fire or prevent the water from reaching the fire. Installing suspended cover above the sprinklers can be more costly and complicated due to the increased amount of penetrations to work around. There is also the risk that the cover could fall onto the sprinkler heads during a fire.

That is why TuffWrap® Canada only uses SmartSeam® for suspended cover projects. SmartSeam is the invention of TuffWrap Canada’s parent company, TuffWrap Installations, Inc.

SmartSeam is:

Effective in protecting against dust and debris during reroofing.

Antimicrobial, antistatic and flame resistant.

Tested and Passed nationally recognized test standards designed by Fire Safety Engineers (UL723S)

Meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 13) & fire safety codes across North America.

How does SmartSeam work?

What makes SmartSeam special is its heat-reactive seam, an advanced technology engineered by TuffWrap Installations. When the seam is activated by the heat of a fire, the suspended cover panels open, permitting the sprinklers to function as designed.

Understanding the details. Having a product that is Classified by UL to 723S and therefore meets NFPA 13 is an important process that we as interior protection providers take very seriously. Here’s what you need to know:

Research and Development:  SmartSeam is a proprietary product invented by an in-house team at TuffWrap Installations, Inc. Not only is the seam critical to its functionality, the configuration of the poly panels and how it is installed are important as well. Every aspect of the final solution was taken into consideration in order for it to work properly.

Manufacturing process:  It is TuffWrap Installation’s own invention. Their machinery is “one of a kind” and not currently available for use anywhere else. They are inspected by an independent laboratory four times a year.
